Tom McEvoy was born on November 14, 1944 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, and now he resides in Las Veas, Nevada. He learned to play poker on his grandmother's knee when he was 5 years old and has been working on improving his game ever since. He graduated from the Ferris State University and until 1978, when he started playing poker full time he was working as an accountant.
He played for about 10 years, but his first serious poker tournament participation was not until 1982, and next year in 1983, McEvoy won his first gold bracelet. He has a total of ten first places and the total amount of Tom’s earnings is $1,043,449! Tom McEvoy has played against every Word Series of Poker main event winner in the history of the event. In March 2006, McEvoy won the third ever Professional Poker Tour event beating a field of professionals.. He was also the first main event winner to earn his buy-in through a satelite tournament.
In his career Tom McEvoy has won four WSOP gold bracelets, 29 in-the-money finishes at World Series events, a Hall of Fame title, an Irish Championship, and a Super Bowl of Poker title.
With his place in poker history already secure, it almost doesn’t matter what McEvoy achieves in the future. Yet with so much experience and natural skill for the game, don’t be surprised if he wins another big event soon, which is his ambition right now. Besides all of his poker achievements, Tom spent some time in writing as well. He has written a lot of books with co-writers like T.J. Cloutier, Max Stern and Linda Johnson. And that’s not the only think he likes to do.,He also enjoys collecting stamps, watching movies, reading about history and dining at fine restaurants. He has a girlfriend and three children and loves to spend time with them in parks, on trips or at home.
Due to his experience in life and in poker, he even has some ideas about the future of poker. When asked, he says "If I could change anything in the poker world it would be as follows: uniform rules, no smoking, and a disciplinary committee to bar players for rule infractions and abuses."
According to Tom himself "There's nothing that will ever be better than winning the World Series.” He also likes the benefits of the game well: "I get to travel the world and see foreign countries and exotic islands." And from traveling around live tournaments, his total earnings exceed $2,700,000
