Thomas Hunt’s first major tournament appearance was at the 36th Annual World Series of Poker at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in July 2005. Participating in the Pot Limit Hold'em $1,500 buy-in event along with 1,070 other competitors, each vying for a share of the $1,477,980 prize pool, Hunt finished in a respectable 18th place, taking home earnings of $10,345.

Hunt came back a year later for the 37th edition of the World Series of Poker in July 2006. He was one of 1,918 competitors in the $2,000 buy-in No Limit Hold'em event at the Rio. With a hefty $3,492,580 prize pool as incentive, Hunt made the final table, and an impressive performance saw him secure fourth place and take home a handsome check of $160,659.

Thomas Hunt then picked up his maiden tournament win at the Bellagio Cup II Tournament at Vegas’ Bellagio Casino in July 2006, soon after his confidence-building performance at the WSOP event. In the No Limit Hold'em event, with 468 competitors contending for a share of $454,930, Hunt came out on top and won an impressive $136,480. Thomas Hunt then turned his attention to the Finals of the World Poker Tour 2007. In the Omaha Hi/Lo event, Hunt finished 11th with $2,176 in earnings, whereas in the No Limit Hold'em event, he took home $1,140 for his 26th place finish.

In the Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better event featuring a $1,137,045 prize pool and 833 contestants, Hunt finished a disappointing 70th, picking up $3,070 in the $1,500 buy-in event. He offset that poor performance with a 7th place finish in Event #42, of the Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better event. Facing 686 contestants in his quest for a chunk of the $937,755 pool, Thomas Hunt’s impressive performance won him $25,319. Hunt then finished on a high note in the 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo 8 or Better event. One of 544 contestants, each eyeing the prize pool of $742,560, Hunt made the final table and put up a brave fight before being eliminated in level 23 by Ron Long and eventual winner Ryan Hughes. Hunt finished in 3rd and picked up a handsome $68,686 for his efforts.
