Soren Turkewitsch, a Canadian poker player, is a native of Oshawa, Ontario, which is 45 minutes east of Toronto.
He had completed a college course in which he learnt about home inspection, and later worked part time at two small feeder plants, which manufactured car parts mostly for General Motors Corporation. In fact, at one point of time, Soren Turkewitsch was working three jobs in order to make ends meet.
Soren Turkewitsch used to frequent the Blue Heron and Port Perry casinos, where he played blackjack, and he gradually started playing poker as well. However he did not entertain any thoughts of becoming a professional and played $5-$10 limit only for fun. He also played online poker at PokerStars, but did not continue playing there after a few months.
Soren Turkewitsch tasted victory in the sit-and-go event in a $90 satellite tournament at the Fallsview Casino resort in Niagara Falls and earned a seat in the North American Poker Championship of the World Poker Tour (WPT) Event Season 5 scheduled to be held at the same venue. This time around, the Niagara Falls View Casino played host to 497 poker players who were in the contention for the title in the World Poker Tour No-Limit Hold’em event. Each player spent $10,000 + $3,000 as buy-in for this event that amounted to a prize pool of $4,829,332. Soren Turkewitsch played well against his opponents and managed to reach the final table, which included professional players like Jason Sagle, John Lam, James "KrazyKanuck" Worth, John Juanda, and Marc Karam. As the event progressed, only Soren Turkewitsch and Jason Sagle made it to the heads-up stage. During the final hand, the former moved all in with Kh 2d and Sagle called with Ac 5d. The flop did not favor Jason Sagle as 7d 6c 2h in the flop paired with the deuce held by Soren Turkewitsch. The 4h on the turn too was not of any help to Sagle. The river was a Jc, spelling curtains to his game, and gave Soren Turkewitsch his first ever World Poker Title as well as a staggering $1,352,224 in prize money.
