He first caught the attention of the poker world in Februrary 2000 by finishing as the runner-up in the Pot-Limit Hold’em event at the LA Poker Classic Tournament, bagging $12,250. He made several impressive final-table finishes between July 2000 and September 2001. Jimmy Tran achieved a landmark in his career by winning the Pot-Limit Hold’em event at the National Championship of Poker.
On July 16, 2002, Jimmy Tran achieved a milestone in Event 12 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo at the Orleans Open Tournament by securing first place. He also won $19,885 for his performance. The same month, he bagged $15,030 in Event 16 Limit Hold’em at the same tournament for his runner-up finish. The following month, he played in Event 16 Limit Seven Card Stud at the Legends of Poker World Poker Tour (WPT) Season 1 finished fifth and collected $1,875.

The Limit Hold’em Event 11 at the Sport of Kings Tournament, which was held at the Hollywood Park Casino, had a prize pool of $96,905 and Jimmy Tran went on to finish second and earn $19,380.
On July 23, 2003, he played brilliantly to come first in the No-Limit Hold’em event at the Orleans Open and bagged $16,650. A few days later, in the same tournament, Jimmy Tran secured a respectable sixth-place finish and took home $8,365 for his efforts. In June 2004, he played well enough to secure fourth place in the No-Limit Hold’em Main event at the California State Poker Championship and collected a handsome amount of $62,370. The following month, Jimmy Tran had an impressive second-place finish in the No-Limit Hold’em event at the Orleans Open 2004 and won $8,970.
In April 2005, Jimmy Tran took part in the No-Limit Hold’em Main Event at the Five-Star World Poker Classic – WPT Championship Season 3 and walked away with $30,000. In October that year, Jimmy Tran played remarkably well, outlasting a field of 191 players to emerge as the winner in Event 16 No-Limit Hold’em at the Big Poker October Tournament and got $38,200 in the process.
His first six-digit prize money came at the World Championship – WPT Event Season 5, when Jimmy Tran bagged a whopping $185,645 for ranking tenth in the No-Limit Hold’em Championship that took place in April 2007. In November 13, 2007 he secured sixteenth place in the No-Limit Hold’em Championship at the World Poker Finals – WPT Event Season 6 bringing him $51,339 for his efforts.
