Hans Lund aka Tuna is a long-time American professional poker player. Considered one of the best poker players in the world, Hans Lund has won 2 WSOP bracelets, a Hall of Fame watch, and the main event at the Super Bowl of Poker. Over his 30-year career he has had 28 first place finishes, and accumulated more than than $2.8 million in prize money.
Hans Lund first played a professional event in 1978. He emerged victorious from the $1,500 No Limit Hold'em tournament at the 9th WSOP, won $46,800 - and a WSOP bracelet. He would go on to play numerous tournaments of every buy-in amount.
In the 1980s and 1990s it was not uncommon to see Hans Lund "holding court" at some empty table. Experienced and rookie players alike considered him an expert on the game, and bombard him with questions about their play. His agreeable demeanor and honest approach at these situations endeared him to players as much as his achievements did. When he was not playing or giving advice, however, Hans Lund was to be found at the slot machine in Vegas or his home town of Reno. According to his own account, he could play for four or five days straight.
Before April 1991, Hans Lund never fell further down than the ninth place in any game he played. The high-profile 1990 WSOP saw Hans Lund dishing out one of the most thrilling moments in poker history. He was left heads-up against Mansour Matloubi. Leading in chips, he went all-in with A-9 and was called by Matloubi with 10-10. All that Lund now needed was to avoid the last couple of tens in the deck, but a 10 on the river killed his hope for a second WSOP bracelet. He came in a great second, however, and won $334,000 - a sum higher than he had netted in both his WSOP first-place finishes.
In 1996 Hans Lund managed to make up for his 1990 defeat, when he won his second WSOP bracelet at the $1,500 Ace to Five Draw tournament. That year's event proved highly successful for Tuna - he finished in the money in four tournaments, and netted more than $100,000. Despite this, the fabulous 90's would soon be over for him. In 1997 Lund obtained primary custody over his two young children, and decided to give the professional circuit a break. He has since been going by Dad far more than by Tuna, but maintains his strong bonds with the professional arena. He recently said he considered the younger generation of poker players to be aggressive, energetic puppies, while being an old hound dog himself. There's no doubt, however, than Hans Lund can teach many new tricks to many new pros.
