NBA Players Almost Have Gunfight Over Poker Game

by Kate 5. January 2010 08:17

It seems high stakes ‘dangerous’ poker games don’t only seem to happen in Wild West cliche movies.

A game of high stakes poker between 2 NBA players; Gilbert Arenas and Jarvis Crittention did not seem to end very well. The 2 were playing a game and it seems one or the players did not pay up.

Arenas turned up in the Wizards locker room armed with 3 guns. He allegedly put the 3 guns on a chair next to Crittentons locker in an attempt to intimidate the 22 year old into paying his $25,0000 debt. It seems that Arenas then told the other to choose his weapon of choice to which Crittenton replied that he had his own.

It seems he did indeed have his own guns as the two players drew their weapons. No shots were fired.

Arenas, long known for his basketball exploits with the Washington Wizards, has been in the public basketball eye for a long time, though unbeknown to the general public, he’s a part time rounder. Apparently, he’s often found playing online poker in the locker room before games, playing aboard the team jet, as well as winning at least 10 victories amongst his poker playing teammates.

Trying to downplay the situation, Arenas states that himself and Crittenton will remain friends, even stating “We were friends before, we’re friends now”. Now all he has to worry about is his 6 year $111 million dollar contract is still going to be safe

A Bit of Bob Dylan to Ring in The New Year

Lyrics to ‘Ramblin, Gamblin Willie’ by Bob Dylan

Come around you rovin’ gamblers and a story I will tell
About the greatest gambler, you all should know him well.
His name was Will O’ Conley and he gambled all his life,
He had twenty-seven children, yet he never had a wife.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

He gambled in the White House and in the railroad yards,
Wherever there was people, there was Willie and his cards.
He had a reputation as the gamblin’est man around,
Wives would keep their husbands home when Willie came to town.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

Sailin’ down the Mississippi to a town called New Orleans,
They’re still talkin’ about their card game on that Jackson River Queen.
“I’ve come to win some money,” Gamblin’ Willie says,
When the game finally ended up, the whole damn boat was his.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

Up in the Rocky Mountains in a town called Cripple Creek,
There was an all-night poker game, lasted about a week.
Nine hundred miners had laid their money down,
When Willie finally left the room, he owned the whole damn town.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

But Willie had a heart of gold and this I know is true,
He supported all his children, and all their mothers too.
He wore no rings or fancy things, like other gamblers wore,
He spread his money far and wide, to help the sick and the poor.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

When you played your cards with Willie, you never really knew
Whether he was bluffin’ or whether he was true.
He won a fortune from a man who folded in his chair.
The man, he left a diamond flush, Willie didn’t even have a pair.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

It was late one evenin’ during a poker game,
A man lost all his money, he said Willie was to blame.
He shot poor Willie through the head, which was a tragic fate,
When Willie’s cards fell on the floor, they were aces backed with eights.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

So all you rovin’ gamblers, wherever you might be,
The moral of this story is very plain to see.
Make your money while you can, before you have to stop,
For when you pull that dead man’s hand, your gamblin’ days are up.
And it’s ride, Willie, ride,
Roll, Willie, roll,
Wherever you are a-gamblin’ now, nobody really knows.

Poker Playing Celebrities

by James 11. December 2009 11:43

So we all constantly  see in the news about poker playing celebrities and with poker growing faster than ever I though I'd put together a bit of a list of my favourite poker playing Hollwood actors and actresses who play poker.

Shannon Elizabeth

Shannon Elizabeth has been a favorite of men everywhere since she went topless in American Pie & since a considerable share of the poker earth is comprised of male group it's no surprise she was embraced as a poker card game player with outstretched arms.

She's been at the World Series of Poker on countless occasions & so far-removed she's cashed in four times.

Toby Maguire

Tobey is one of the celebrity gamblers who have decided to be taught the game. He has seen accomplishments quite a few times in the money in several event s and has been tutored by poker professional Daniel Negreanu

“He’s more of my victim. I love to take as much money off of him as possible,” the actor told us at a SoHo Rep gala. Norton, who learned how to be a card shark for “Rounders,” is slated to play in a charity tournament in Cannes this month, and he’s hoping another card-playing actor, Tobey Maguire, won’t be there. “I hear Tobey is so good — almost pro-level — so that’s a little intimidating,” Norton said.

Ben Affleck

Ben converted to the world of poker game, maybe due to the fact that his friend Matt Damon gambled in of the main roles in the film “Rounders”. His game was progressing so he determined to rent a. His first tutor was Amir Vahedy who got to travel out on a private plane to give Ben his first lesson. After some time Ben was determined to have a shot at a poker game contest and was knocked out with pocket Aces.

So he decided to find someone else to instruct him and chose Annie Duke. Under her tuition he bettered his skills & won $356,400 at 2004 California State Poker Championship, apropos the first luminary to walk off with a major open competition.

In a short speech he announced that he was not a “complete donkey.”

Hank Azaria

Best well known for his effort on Simpsons, Hank Azaria has been gambling poker card games for many years. He was rumored to have run a home game for celebrities in New York and he's been on more than a few celebrity poker hold em radio shows.

So far his contest record is blank but he if plays at the WSOP hold em and if he keeps his nose to the grindstone he's certain to be in the money

Matt Damon

Matt Damon who was trained trained by 11 time World Series Of Poker star Phil Hellmuth for his role in the 1998 movie Rounders, where he played a law school student who loses his tuition money in a high stakes poker game, only to be dragged back into the circuit to pay debts incurred to a Russian mobster.

The lessons must have took, because Damon has since then played in major Poker tournament who won the Commerce Casino's California State Poker Championship

I leave you with this clip from Oceans 11. It involves Brad Pitt teaching some actors to play
