Poker Stars: Ups & Downs

It ain’t always a smooth ride to the top and we often only see the glamorous and fun side of professional poker. Players have become well known for winning huge amounts of money at glitzy tournaments worldwide. Many of these players have also had their fair share of losses and trials too. It seems an ability to persist and get back up are just as important in professional poker as skills and strategy during the game are.

Phil Hellmouth, one of the best known poker players out there, has won 9 World Series of Poker bracelets. He won it the first time at the tender age of 24 making him the youngest player to win the tournament. Despite the massive poker success, he dropped out of the University of Wisconsin to play professional poker.

Joe Beevers, a well known European poker player was part of the Hendon Mob in 2004 before playing the Hendon Poker Tour all over the world. He teamed up with his father to play blackjack and they were so successful that they were banned from playing in the majority of casinos in London.

Gus Hansen, the winner of 3 World Poker tours and one of the first poker players to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2004, has received considerable negative criticism for his unpredictable poker style. He is said to lead other players to raise a bet or call when he has a winning hand. Despite the criticism, this tactic has contributed to considerable winnings.
