Binions To Close Poker Room

by James 3. December 2009 08:22

The former home of the World Series of Poker, Binions is closing their 365 room hotel this month.

Just for those not in the know, here is a little bit of history about the hotel and the poker side of it:

In 1970, the World Series of Poker began. Originally conceptualized as a get together for poker greats who would determine among themselves who was the best, the main event Texas hold’em freezeout, begun in 1971, became the standard way to determine poker’s world champion. The event, which started with just a handful of players, has grown and evolved incredibly over the years to become a massive televised event in the modern era.”

“We plan to reopen it, but we can’t speculate when that will happen. Las Vegas has been hit so hard with the dramatic drop in visitor spending and the average daily room rate has plummeted. Our hotel rooms were no longer competitive in the market. We had to make cuts where our biggest drains were, the hotel and coffee shop.” Lisa Robinson, owner of TLC Enterprises the operators of the hotel said earlier this week.

However, on the good news front the casino, and poker room are remaining open alongside the Binions Steakhouse on the 24th floor.
